Being our very first markets, we want to make sure everything runs smoothly and that everyone is on the same page as to how the market will run. We ALL want this to be a success and to run 12 summer markets every year. To do that we all need to make an effort to bring quality, appeal and our beautiful personalities to the table.
Here are a few basic tips for our market, these are essentials for all of us and for the market as a whole.
Is this your first Methven Arts & Growers Market? Or even first market, ever? Then this page is for you! Although this whole website for our stallholders is filled with helpful information, below we have summed up some basic tips for the market. If you have any questions, send us an email and we'll be more than happy to help you out!
- Have a good float to make change. Allow for the first two customers of the day giving you a $100 note for a $5 purchase. It happens! Think about the cost of your products and how you'll generally be making change, allow for this when organising your float. At this stage there will be no facilities for change.I am looking into getting a mobile Eftpos terminal so that I can do cash out, but that will be in $20 notes, nothing smaller.
- Be friendly! Everyone loves a friendly stallholder. Engage with your customers. Compliments are a great way to break the ice!
I’m not going to get into it but my sister was a manager of a jewellery store. They had to F.A.B.G. what they were selling.I hear you say what’s that!In Short – Feature, Advantage, Benefit, Grabber. This is how I got my job in the bank.My boss had a massive, tall jar of jelly beans and in my interview, told me to sell them to her.I did. I explained how the glass was so shiny and see through you could see all of the jellybeans. The advantage was that the jar was so mobile you could take it anywhere, the benefit was that it had a lift off lid so you could pick out any jellybean you wanted, the grabber was that it was so full of jelly beans that you had them for an eternity!See how easy it is?You are the best seller of your product. You know it inside out, so when someone asks you about it, tell them everything they need to know.Don’t be shy. Make that sale!!
- Take the opportunity to talk to your stall neighbours. Methven is a great place to network with other like-minded people. We are thrilled to be the starting base for many great friendships.
- Bring a friend or family member with you to help you. You'll be thankful that you have someone to mind your stall when you need a bathroom break, have a quick shop, share the excitement of your first sale and keep your sanity in check.
- Every market is not solely for sales, it's also about you advertising and marketing your business, getting your name and products in front of people's eyes. You never know who will pick up a business card and contact you later. I am one of those people who’s contacted you! Many store owners go to markets and seek out new and original wares for their store and may contact you about becoming a stockist. Just an FYI, there are more than 250 Airbnb's in Methven and people are always looking to update their decor!
- Standard sites are 3m x 3m but most vary from 3m x 2m to 3m x 7m. Please stay within your allocated space. Your site does not come with division walls or backs. Your site is butted up against the site next to you and there is no wiggle room whatsoever.
